When people think of tanning beds, they rarely consider one of the most important components of the bed – the tanning bed acrylic shields. Quite a bit of technology goes into creating these all-important shields, and choosing the right shields, and maintaining them is of the utmost importance!
It is important to realize that the slightest nicks and scratches in the acrylic shields change the degree of UV rays that are getting through, even if it still doesn’t allow the heat to get through. The increased amount of UV rays poses a greater threat to the tanners – and they generally don’t realize it! This is why it is important to inspect the acrylic shields on a regular basis, and to replace the shields when there are nicks and scratches.
Most makers of acrylic shields, such as Solacryl, offer a 10,000 hour warranty. That warranty is usually voided, however, if products or additives that are designed to make the sheet of acrylic ‘stronger’ are used. These types of products are actually attacked by the UV rays, and this causes the shields to wear out faster. Representatives of Solacryl warn salon owners that no such products are needed to increase the life of the shields, and in fact, they only serve to shorten the life!
Products such as these aren’t the only things that can damage the shields or shorten the life of the shields. Bad bulbs, or bulbs with the incorrect wattage can also do damage, as well as fans that are not set or working properly. The products used to clean the beds can also pose a threat to the life of the acrylic shields. Not just any cleaning product will do! You should only use products that are meant specifically for cleaning tanning beds. The cleaner that the manufacturer of the shields recommends should be used in most cases.
If you want your tanning bed acrylic shields to last a long time, it is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inspecting and maintaining the shields. Avoid products that are not meant for tanning beds, as well as products that claim to lengthen the life of the shields!
