Indoor Tanning Beds

Indoor tanning beds have a lot of benefits for people who want deep dark tans. The FDA determined many years ago that UV rays from the sunshine were the leading cause of skin cancer. The UV rays from indoor tanning beds can also cause skin cancer, but the danger is greatly reduced.

While that danger is greatly reduced, it is not altogether gone. You can get skin cancer from using tanning beds as well. The reduction in the risk comes from the fact that you don’t have to lie in the tanning bed for a long period of time to get a good tan. You don’t risk burning your skin as long as you follow the session time guidelines. This is how your risk is reduced.

There are other risks with indoor tanning beds, however. If you own your own tanning bed, you don’t have to worry about germs. But if you use the beds in tanning salons, this is an issue that you need to address. Make sure that the tanning salon is using a sanitizer between each and every client. If the bed isn’t cleaned properly after each use, you can be certain that you are literally lying in the sweat of the salon’s last client when you tan.

Tanning beds are not hot like the sun. The acrylic shields protect the tanner from the heat, while still allowing the UV rays which cause our skin to brown to seep through. Because UV rays are still present, it is vastly important not to stay in the tanning bed too long, or to have too many tanning sessions per week!

Indoor tanning beds offer us quite a bit of convenience, safety, and relaxation. It is at least fifteen or twenty minutes of undisturbed time that we can have for ourselves, two or three times each and every week! However, if you don’t follow the proper precautions, your relaxing tanning sessions could easily turn into a nightmare of staph infections and even skin cancer!
