Avoiding the Dangers of Using a Tanning BedUsing a tanning bed instead of going to the beach to soak up some sun is becoming more and more popular nowadays. Getting a bake on a tanning bed is more convenient for one thing, not to mention relatively faster. For another, a tanning bed can get you a really even tan, something you can never fully achieve through natural tanning, unless you go to a nudist beach and sprawl completely naked under the sun for weeks on end. However, using a tanning bed can lead to a host of problems if used improperly. As always, you can never have too much of a good thing, and while tanning beds are relatively safe, you still have to be careful whenever you use one. Observing simple cautionary measures can go a long way in keeping you out of harm's way. One way of keeping safe when using a tanning bed is to keep your exposure to a certain limit. Get a tanning bed that has a timer which will direct the lights to shut off automatically, or at least signal you once you have reached the recommended exposure limit for your skin type. Going over your exposure limit will cause sunburn and can potentially lead to more serious skin damage later on. If you are going to buy your own tanning bed, make sure that the tanning bed you are going to buy comes with safety goggles. Wearing these safety goggles when you are using the tanning bed will protect your eyes from harmful exposure to tanning light, which is mostly ultraviolet light. The eyes are very sensitive organs and UV exposure can burn your retinas. Before you actually use a tanning bed, make sure your health allows you to. Certain medical conditions like lupus or diabetes prevent people from using tanning beds because UV radiation can make the condition worse. Taking certain prescription drugs like anti-allergy medicine or birth control pills can make the skin more sensitive to artificial light. So always take care before and whenever you are using a tanning bed. After all, safety should always come first! |
